AdaptiveHypertext systems change their content, their link structure, or both to adapt to the specific needs and preferences of individual readers.
Adaptive hypertext systems construct a user model that represents the system's understanding of the user, and select content and links based on this model. For example, if the system knows the reader is American, it might describe distances in miles where a European reader would prefer kilometers. Similarly, text intended for beginning students might be briefer, less discursive, and offer fewer annotations and external links than text intended for advanced students or for professional consultation.
